My feedback:
As I often travel by myself and do not want to take the metro after dark, I feel very comfortable at either Hotel. They are both in locations that I can stroll along the malls and stores at night , marvel at the illuminations and people watch from an unlimited choice of sidewalk cafes. Most have glass enclosures behind the open terraces for those rainy days.
Hotel Matignon is a brief walk to the main boulevards ( check out the bakery across the street )
Hotel Etoile is located behind the Arc de Triomphe accessible to the Champs Elysee by an underpass or a good brisk walk . This is an area of inexpensive local restaurants.
Both Hotels provide their clients with a very helpful friendly bilingual staff and all the little things that we run out of while traveling including shoe cream. :))
