Disney without the kids

Now that school is back in session and the air is getting that familiar chill, why not plan a fall getaway just for mom and dad?

Walt Disney World, Florida, offers its lowest rates in the fall, and there are hundreds of activities you can enjoy without the kids. You don't even need to go to the theme parks unless you want to. The Disney Institute offers accommodations, spa and salon services, and classes and instruction in everything from oil painting and rock climbing, to tennis and canoeing. If you can imagine it, it's offered at the Disney Institute.

For evening entertainment, Disney offers two nightclub districts: Downtown Disney and Disney's Boardwalk.

Downtown Disney features, Pleasure Island, a collection of nightclubs and shops where every night celebrates New Year's Eve; Planet Hollywood; the Rainforest Cafe; Wolfgang Puck's Cafe; the House of Blues; a 24-screen movie theater and more. Disney's Boardwalk offers the ESPN Sports Bar with TVs everywhere you can imagine, several restaurants and cafes, a Dance Hall, and Jellyrolls, which features dueling pianos. There are more than a half dozen hotels within walking distance of both Downtown Disney and Disney's Boardwalk, making either location the perfect place for a relaxing weekend getaway.

Beating travel stress

Business travelers often face tension while battling traffic and delays of all kinds in trying to reach their final destinations. The National Headache Foundation, a nonprofit group, offers these tips for road warriors to help avoid headaches while traveling:

  • Plan in advance to avoid last-minute stress. Make to-do lists and get plenty of rest to prevent fatigue and irritation.
  • Follow your diet. Certain eating habits, such as skipping meals and eating too much ripe cheeses and chocolates are discouraged.
  • Avoid alcohol. Drinking alcohol, which leads to dehydration, also causes headaches, especially aboard aircraft, where the recirculated air is very dry.

International corporate travelers, in particular, should be aware of the fact that altitude changes, climatic variations and time-zone shifts can play havoc with a headache medication dosage schedule, and patients should consult their doctor before embarking on long trips.

It's better in the Bahamas

The Radisson Cable Beach Resort in Nassau, Bahamas, has recently undergone a $15-million enhancement program. To celebrate, the resort is offering fall travelers special all-inclusive rates. Priced from $195 per person, per night, the all-inclusive packages include roundtrip airport transfers; all meals and drinks in six distinctive restaurants and five bars and lounges; unlimited golf green fees; sailing, snorkeling, kayaks and other water sports; children under 4 years stay, eat and play free; Camp Junkanoo for the kids 4-11 years; all hotel taxes, tolls and gratuities.

Set upon a 1,000 foot stretch of Nassau's finest white-sand beach, the luxurious Radisson Cable Beach Resort features a seven-acre waterscape with pools, waterfalls and Jacuzzis, championship golf and a dazzling casino adjacent to the hotel. It's the ideal vacation choice for singles, couples and families.

What to do in Washington D.C.

When you're visiting the nation's capital, it's easy to get confused by everything there is to see and do. The concierge desk at the One Washington Circle Hotel has compiled a list of top attractions that you don't want to miss if you visit Washington, D.C.:

  • See the Spirit of St. Louis at the National Air and Space Museum.
  • Take in a show at the Kennedy Center.
  • Watch Congress at work at the U.S. Capitol Building.
  • Browse the Library of Congress.
  • Take a guided tour of the White House.
  • Visit Arlington National Cemetery.
  • Ascend the Washington Monument.
  • Stroll through the U.S. National Arboretum.
  • Jog or bike through Rock Creek Park.
  • Experience prehistoric times at the Smithsonian's Natural History museum.

If your visit allows more time, ask the concierge at your hotel for additional recommendations. They will know about any delays or wait times involved with visiting the city's top attractions.

'50s-style New Year on the river

The clock is ticking toward the Year 2000, but the Delta Queen Steamboat Co., America's oldest cruise line, is turning back time to the 1950s. If you'd rather think of "Happy Days" than Y2K, pack your penny loafers and poodle skirts for one of five "fabulous 50s" celebrations aboard an old-fashioned paddlewheeler. Choose from a trio of "1950s Hit Review- cruises in April 2000 on the Mississippi Queen, or a pair of "1950s Rockin' on the River" cruises in July 2000 on the American Queen. All of the vacations feature superstars of the '50s who will join passengers to help recreate the music and memories of the era.

  • 1950s Hit Review - The focus is on the romantic '50s for these cruises: New Orleans roundtrip, four nights, April 15-19, with fares from $800; New Orleans to Memphis, seven nights, April 19-26, with fares from $1,070; and Memphis to St. Louis, four nights, April 26-30, with fares from $800.
  • 1950s Rockin' on the River - These are "rock around the clock" cruises: Cincinnati roundtrip, three nights, July 21-24, with fares from $950; and Cincinnati to Pittsburgh, four nights, July 24-28, with fares from $1,160.

Passengers can take advantage of an Early Booking Discount when reserving a stateroom with a $300 per person deposit at least six months before departure. Early bookers will also receive a roundtrip airfare rate of $150 per person, a free two-night hotel stay or a $150 per person travel allowance (subject to availability and a few restrictions).

All fares are per person, double occupancy, and include port charges/costs, four sumptuous meals each day, all onboard activities and the service of an American crew.
