Travel agents earn their livings from commissions paid by their suppliers (the airlines, tour companies, hotels, etc.). No extra price for aproduct is passed on to the consumer. You may have read or heard, however, that with the imposition of commission caps by the airlines, some travel agencies have decided to charge fees for their service.

If you book directly with an airline, or cruise, or tour company, you may encounter their own "bias," and not necessarily get the best available price. They will not tell you, for example, that their competitor has a better price, or that another company might be a better choice for you. In fact, they may not give you their own best available price, unless you know to ask for it. Your travel agent should help you look at your options. Did you know that the major Internet booking services are owned or in partnership with an airline. Travel Agents arrange 80% of all air travel, 95%of all cruise reservations and 65% of all car rentals and hotel reservations.
