Whether you take a 7, 10, or 11 night Alaska vacation, cruise ships will take you from garden-like Vancouver past the ever-changing vista so the famed Inside Passage to some of Alaska’s most exciting towns.
History’s still being make in this land of adventure. Try panning for gold and you just might start a new Gold Rush. Visit a Chilkat Indian village and be greeted with the warmth and hospitality that met the first Russian fur traders almost 300 years ago.
The top cruise destination in the world may be the Caribbean, but more people ask me about cruising in Alaska than anywhere else. There's something almost mystical about being on a ship in calm waters watching giant glaciers thunderously calve into the sea.
Add to that Alaska's vast wilderness areas, dense forests and scenic fjords, the state's fascinating frontier and Native American culture, and the frequency of bald eagle, grizzly bear and whale sightings (Humpbacks, Belugas and Minkes are among those commonly spotted here), and you have a vacation experience that's hard to beat.
The Weather: The Alaska season is May to Sept., and even in the summer, Alaska is not a warm weather destination. You will want to pack a hat and gloves. On the other hand, it may be warm enough in August for a dip in the ship's pool.
Cruisetours: You can't see all of Alaska by ship, and if you've come this far you may want to also see in-land areas such as the Denali National Park and Mount McKinley, Fairbanks, Nome and the Canadian Rockies. The cruise lines make it easy by packaging cruises with optional land-based tours. The market leaders in this regard are Holland America Line and Princess. In fact, other lines buy land products from them. The cruisetours allow you to stretch your
vacation to 9 to 21 days. Shore excursions: Alaska is one place where you'll want to take advantage of shore excursion options, so budget accordingly. Among the most popular are flightseeing trips over the glaciers, and kayak treks into nature areas. You can also go salmon fishing, mountain biking and even dog sledding. Rates range from about $25 for a city tour (by bus), to $165 and up for a trip by seaplane or helicopter.
Alaska is the type of travel destination that will grab hold of you, so be prepared. You'll probably want to come back for more.
Don’t be surprised if you see eagles circling over head or whales dancing at the bow.
Walk on a glacier. Fish for your own salmon dinner. Buy a totem pole. Or enjoy Alaska’s simple pleasures from your ship’s cozy decks, where you’ll always be greeted with a warm welcome and another inspiring view.
