Paul Bennett |
Died
January 21st 1979
Paul T. Bennett of Monroe died at the age of 63 on January 21 1979 in Monroe following a short illness. He was born January 30th 1915 in Palouse, WA. Paul Bennett came to teach in Monroe in 1936 when the district had two elementary schools and a high school. Shortly after he arrived the building now called Monroe Elementary School was built. Originally beginning his teaching in music, Bennett later switched to teaching U.S. history and government classes. He was director of the band and has been credited with starting an excellent band program still maintained today. It was Bennett who laid the groundwork. Paul Bennett interrupted his teaching for a stint in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He spent the war as a weather observer in Greenland. Together with teacher Dick Gemmill, Bennett taught virtually all of the juniors and seniors in the district in the subjects of history and government. Students and teachers both appreciated Bennett's well organized teaching. The students rewarded Bennett with enthusiasm and attentive behavior in class. The teachers gave him their respect, admiration and friendship. Bennett's subtle sense of humor and well informed lectures were cut short by illness in 1971 when he retired from Monroe High School. He was a member of the Monroe Congregational Church, the American Legion and a graduate of Eastern Washington College of Education at Cheney, WA. Bennett served in the Army Air Corp during WWII as a weather observer in Greenland. He is survived by hi wife, Betty, his daughter, Suzanne (Donald) Dyer of Memphis TN., his grandchildren, Devin Lee and Dawn Cheree, his brother Philip A. Bennett of Spokane and his sister, Ellen (John) Fishback of Washougal, WA. |

Al Borlin |
Died December 5th 1976
Allan Borlin--one of this community's leading civic servants and sans peer as a vocational agriculture instructor and Future Farmers of America advisor--passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 5, 1976.
Mr. Borlin was born in Monroe on March 7, 1911. Man and boy, this valley was his home. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1930, earned his B.A. degree in agriculture education at Washington State College (now W.S.U.) in 1941. In July of 1941, he married Dorothy Laura Eilert (she preceded him in death in 1961) of Eastern Washington and they made their home in Cheney, where he taught agriculture for four years. Blessed with their daughter Nancy, they returned to Monroe in 1944 where his tenure began as a vocational agriculture instructor with Monroe Public Schools and advisor to the Monroe Future Farmers of America Chapter. Twin daughters, Kathleen and Carol, were born in 1946. Mr. Borlin's career as a professional educator spanned 26 years in Monroe until his retirement in 1971. Upon that occasion the city declared an "Allan Borlin Day" at which time he was honored for his local, state and national accomplishments. He was the recipient of honorary State and American farmer degrees, the latter during the 1953 National F.F.A. Convention in Kansas City. Allan Borlin was always active in educational and community affairs, including 25 years as a director of the Evergreen State Fair and as a member of the Monroe Kiwanis Club. He served as a Monroe city councilman from 1964 to January 1973 when he was named pro-tem mayor for the duration of 1973. He was re-elected to the city council in 1974 and was serving with distinction as the head of the streets and parks committee at the time of his death. With the cooperation of many people, his love of flowers and lanscaping has given Monroe parks and parkways a state-wide reputation for beauty. Recently, Buck Island Park was renamed Al Borlin Park. Surviving are his daughters Mrs. Gerald (Nancy) Fessenden, Mrs. Rick (Carol) Webber and Mrs. Lowell (Kathleen) Braaten, granddaughter Laura Braaten and numerous relatives. |

Charles LaBounty |
Died February 19th 2008 |
Charles LaBounty, a psychology professor at St. Paul's Hamline University, packed the house when he led workshops for teachers in Minnesota, Canada and several western states.
"Thousands of teachers have learned from him," said Steve Jongewaard, a Hamline Education Department professor who also taught the workshops LaBounty developed. LaBounty died at his Roseville home on Feb. 19 of complications from liver disease. The longtime St. Paul resident was 68. LaBounty "resonated" with teachers meeting professional education requirements at his workshops and he was "hilarious," said Jongewaard. He began teaching the workshop "Discipline without Tears: Positive Classroom Control'' in the late 1970s. When teachers left his workshop they believed "I am going to be a better teacher as a result," said Jongewaard. "Chuck was indeed committed to the values of student-centeredness and student engagement, and no doubt he will be missed by many faculty, staff and students from our community," said Fernando Delgado, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, in a Hamline newsletter. LaBounty joined the Hamline faculty in 1972 after teaching at the University of California, San Diego, where he received his Ph.D. in the early 1970s. In 1984, Hamline named him its Burton and Ruth Grimes Teaching Award winner. At Hamline, he began teaching in the education department and moved to the psychology department in the late 1980s. He enjoyed his cabin near Remer, Minn., and hiking and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Karen, of St. Paul; sons, Brian of Eagan and Bradly of Seattle; stepchildren Joe, Jenna and Paul Burgoyne of St. Paul; sister Laura Autio of Seattle, and three grandchildren. Services have been held. Gene Maxim Betty Died January 6, 2011 |
![]() | ![]() |
Eugene Franklin Maxim, 81, of Arlington, WA passed away peacefully January 6, 2011, surrounded by loving family members. Gene was born July 29, 1929 in South Paris, Maine to Phillip and Geraldine Maxim. After graduating from Windham High School, Gene joined the United States Navy in 1948. He served aboard both the USS Sea Fox and USS Bergall and played baseball at the sub base in Pearl Harbor, HI.
Following honorable discharge from the Navy in 1952, Gene set out to pursue his dream of teaching and coaching. He traveled to Bellingham, WA where he met his lifelong love, Betty Drivstuen, and earned his teaching degree from Western Washington College. Gene also enjoyed playing baseball for the Bellingham Bells during this time. He once struck out seventeen batters in a seven-inning game!
Gene had a distinguished career as an educator and coach. He began his teaching and coaching career in 1957 in Tenino, WA where he served for three years. Next, he was in Napavine, WA where his varsity boys basketball team took third in State. For the next five years Gene served as teacher and coach in Monroe, WA where he was able to take a beleaguered boys basketball team and turn them in to winners both on and off the court. Years later, sports writer and former player, Dan Weaver, paid tribute to his coach. "What elevated Gene Maxim was the way he promoted self-esteem in the bullies, hoods and the good kids he inherited. He kept players who couldn't jump and cut those who wouldn't listen. He took a bunch of slow, short white guys and tuned them into a bunch of slow, short white guys. But on the way we began to think of ourselves as special."
In 1965 Gene reluctantly left coaching behind and joined the administrative ranks. He served as principal at Monroe High School, assistant superintendent at Sedro-Woolley, and led Lower Snoqualmie Valley (Riverview) School District as superintendent for ten years. During his tenure as superintendent Gene served as the national chairman of the Small Schools Superintendents Committee and was appointed to serve on a federal task force for the Department of Education. In 1985 Gene retired from public service, except for a brief time serving as interim superintendent for the Stevenson-Carson School District.
Gene enjoyed retirement living at the beach on Whidbey Island, golfing, and traveling to Arizona. In 2000, Betty and Gene returned to Arlington, Betty's hometown, to be closer to family and friends.
Gene leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Betty; his children, Brad (Judy) Maxim, Marcie (Mike) Moore, Julie Maxim, and Tom (Orly) Maxim; and his grandchildren, Todd, Tracy, Tyler, Madison, Jack, Elan, and Neri. He is also survived by his mother, 98; his sister, Mary Lou; and three brothers, Bruce, David, and Jerry.
A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 15 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 615 E. Highland Dr., Arlington. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations were made to the Little White Church on the Hill, P.O. Box 100, Silvana, WA 98287, the Washington Talking Book Library, 2021 9th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121, or Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 615 E. Island Drive, Arlington, WA 98223.

I grew up in the Shoreline district north of Seattle just above Carcreek Park. Attended Lincoln High School in the Wallingford area and graduated in 1952. Played varsity basketball and baseball in 1951 and 1952. I wasn't very good because I couldn't shoot very well in basketball and I couldn't hit very good in baseball. Attended Western Washington College of Education in Bellingham. Graduated in 1956 with a BA in Education. Played on the varsity golf team 1954, 55 and 56. I wasn't very good in golf either because I couldn't putt and couldn't hit the ball out of my own shadow. I played best when it was cloudy. I married Sally in September of 1955. We have three girls. Connie, Christy and Cindy and all graduated from Monroe. Sally graduated from Lincoln High School also and attended Western. My first teaching job was at the Monroe Central School teaching 5th grade. These kids became the graduating class of 1964. Many of these poor kids had me in 5th grade along with 7th, 8th and 9th because I got a teaching job at Monroe Junior High School for 3 years and then to Monroe High School for 12 years. I retired from teaching in 1982 and started a new career working at Snohomish Golf course for 20 years. I am now retired. My wife Sally and I spend most of our time now with past students that have great respect for me and treat me with kindness, honor and don't talk very nice to me just like in 1964. |
